Lucy didn't stop. She turned to Adriana again, her hands clasped together.
"If you can help," she said softly, "I'll work for you… like a cow. I'll clean, cook, do anything. Just please… please help us."
Adriana let out a soft laugh.
It wasn't a cruel laugh, but it wasn't kind either.
It sounded like she had heard this kind of thing too many times before.
She was truly touched by the brother and sister pair's kidney-touching performance!
"That's easy to say," she said, folding her arms. "But your brother already owes me $8,000. He hasn't paid even one cent back."
She looked at Henry for a second before turning her eyes back to Lucy.
"If I help you now," Adriana said calmly, "it'll be more than $10,000 I've given him, with almost no promise I'll ever get it back."
Her words hit the room like a stone. Lucy's mouth opened, but no words came out. She looked like she was going to cry again.
