Chapter 25 - Having fun

3RD Person's Point of View

Location: The Hearthbloom Orphanage, Evolto City

The morning sun filtered through the wide crystal-pane windows of the Hearthbloom Orphanage, casting golden streaks across the playroom floor. In a quiet corner of the dormitory, eight-year-old Kairo stood in front of a mirror, tugging nervously at the collar of his tiny pressed jacket. He had styled his curly black hair the best he could and was making sure his shoes were spotless today was the day he would finally meet him.

His soon-to-be dad.

Or... maybe. It wasn't official yet. But today they'd spend time together, and that meant something. A lot, actually.

"You look sharp," came a gentle voice from behind him. It was Sylvi, the Dendrite orphan tall and made of green bark with blooming buds that shifted colors with her emotions. Right now, her petals were a soft pink. "He's going to be so proud to see you like this."

"Thanks," Kairo replied, grinning nervously. "I hope I don't talk too much… or too little… or walk weird."

"You always walk weird," piped up a tiny voice. A mop of blond hair peeked up from behind a toy box it was Juno, the youngest human in the orphanage, barely five. "But that's okay. Weird is funny. He'll like that."

Kairo laughed, his nerves easing slightly. Then, as if reality itself had folded inward, Ora appeared phasing smoothly through the dorm wall like a ripple in space. Her translucent form shimmered with shifting fractals, parts of her slipping in and out of conventional perception. Being a Cecilian, a four-dimensional being, meant that she didn't need doors. Or gravity.

"I am only slightly jealous," she said with a voice that echoed oddly, like it existed both inside and outside the room. Her glow pulsed with faint blue a Cecilian sign of teasing.

"I'm not adopted yet," Kairo reminded them, his smile faltering. "We're just spending the day together to see if we fit."

There was a quiet pause as the others looked at each other.

"Still," Sylvi said, stepping beside him. "It means he's thinking about you. That's huge."

Kairo nodded, though his eyes drifted to the clock. His soon-to-be dad, Commander Darek Vos, one of the elite Exo-Guards, was supposed to meet him that two days ago. But there had been an incident in Sector 9. Emergency Jaegers were deployed. The meeting had been delayed. Kairo understood. He really did. Being a hero was messy and unpredictable.

The caretakers, Ms. Lemma and Brother Grael, peeked into the room and beamed when they saw him.

"You look dashing, Kairo," Ms. Lemma said, adjusting his jacket collar lovingly. "He'll be here, sweetheart. Just later than planned."

"You've been so patient," added Brother Grael, giving him a proud nod.

Kairo gave them a sheepish smile and returned to the mirror. "It's okay… I'd rather he be late than not come at all."

There was warmth in his chest a mix of hope and sadness. He wasn't adopted yet. Today wasn't the day he'd finally leave the Hearthbloom with a new family. But it was a step. A beginning. And for Kairo, that was enough to keep smiling.

Even if he had to wait a little longer.

Soon after, the deep hum of a sleek, armored van echoed outside the Hearthbloom Orphanage gates. The vehicle gleamed under the artificial Cerian Sun, bearing the logo of Crystelion Motors a top-of-the-line Crystelion Vanguard XL, a bulky, high-security transport van designed for elite operatives, now humorously repurposed for a personal mission.

Inside the Vanguard XL, the interior was surprisingly spacious its walls reinforced with phase-dampeners and kinetic cushioning, but also outfitted with custom seating. Seven fully armored Exo-Guards filled the cabin, their sleek black-and-chrome suits giving off a faint hum as their systems idled.

Commander Darek Vos sat in the front-most seat, hands clasped, helmet resting in his lap. His jaw was tight. The others watched him with growing curiosity.

"I've seen you walk into a burning void-beast's nest with a grin," muttered one of them, chuckling behind his helmet. "But now you're sweating bullets?"

"Shut it, Tyrin," Darek grumbled, his voice low but not harsh.

Another squadmate leaned forward. "You've got this, boss. He's just a kid. Not a supernova core about to explode."

"He's not just a kid," Darek muttered under his breath, tightening his grip on the helmet. "He's Kairo."

They fell silent after that, letting their commander process his nerves. The vehicle finally came to a gentle halt outside the orphanage gates.

Ms. Lemma and Brother Grael were already at the door, glancing outside as the sleek van's doors opened with a hiss. All seven Exo-Guards stepped out in sync, their armor catching the light in a way that made them look like walking legends. The children at the windows gasped.

Then, from their center, stepped Commander Darek Vos.

He approached slowly, purposeful. His armor still carried faint scars from whatever mission had delayed him, but his posture was relaxed now, calmer. As he reached the steps, he stopped in front of Kairo, who stood nervously with Sylvi, Juno, and Ora just behind him.

Darek dropped to one knee, placing his helmet gently on the ground.

And then he looked up smiling and removed the helmet with a hiss of decompressing air.

His face was worn but kind. His eyes, tired yet warm.

"Hey, kid," Darek said, his voice soft and real. "Sorry I'm late."

Kairo's eyes shimmered, lips quivering with the kind of smile you try to hold back but can't.

"It's okay," he whispered. "You came."

Behind them, even Ms. Lemma's eyes began to mist. Brother Grael just smiled, arms crossed, as the rest of the Exo-Guard squad respectfully waited at a distance, their presence silent support for their commander on the most important mission of his life.

Kairo couldn't hold it anymore.

The moment Darek's voice met his ears gentle, real, present his small hands dropped to his sides, trembling. His vision blurred with tears as emotions overwhelmed him. Then, without a word, he threw himself forward and wrapped his arms tightly around Darek Vos's neck, burying his face into the hardened metal of his shoulder plates.

Darek caught him instinctively, his arms wrapping around the boy with the same strength he used to carry battlefield burdens but this time, it was different. Softer. Warmer. As Kairo shook quietly in his grasp, Darek's grip grew tighter, steadying the boy… and himself.

Tears welled in Darek's eyes. His voice cracked.

"I missed you, kid…"

"I knew you'd come," Kairo whispered back, choked with emotion. "Even if you were late… I knew."

The two stayed there, knelt in front of Hearthbloom Orphanage's doorway, two people bound by something far stronger than duty or circumstance. Their bond had started years ago when Darek first visited the orphanage during a city peacekeeping outreach. He wasn't supposed to stay long just an hour or two. But he ended up spending the whole day playing with Kairo, listening to him talk about animals, drawing terrible robots with him, and laughing until nightfall. That day had stuck with both of them. Darek never stopped visiting. Kairo never stopped hoping.

Behind them, the squad of Exo-Guards stood still in their gleaming armor, quiet as stone. But one by one, their heads dipped slightly, hands discreetly wiping under visors or shaking gently with silent emotion.

"Is Is Commander Vos crying?" Tyrin whispered, voice cracking over the comm.

"I swear to the Sun, if you say anything right now, I'll dropkick you through a building," murmured another, voice trembling.

Even Ora, phasing partially through a bench beside Juno, flickered in colors of pure, radiant joy.

In that moment, the war-hardened silence of Evolto's protectors was broken not by violence but by love. The kind forged over years, through hopes written in crayon, and visits that meant the world to a little boy.

And as they hugged, Kairo whispered one more thing.

"You think… maybe next time… it'll be real? That I'll get to call you Dad?"

Darek rested his forehead against Kairo's and smiled.

"I already feel like you do, son."

Darek stood slowly, rising with a grace that felt unnatural for someone in heavy Exo-Guard armor. And yet, there he was lifting Kairo effortlessly into his arms, cradling him with a gentleness that made even Ms. Lemma gasp softly. The boy clung to him, arms around his neck, cheek resting against the cool metal of his shoulder as if he'd finally found home.

The towering Exo-Guard turned, still holding Kairo, and began walking toward the Crystelion Vanguard XL. His squad followed closely behind, a quiet parade of armored giants with smiles beneath their helmets. Each one gave Kairo a small wave or a thumbs-up as they climbed into the van, and Kairo waved back, still not letting go of Darek.

Inside the vehicle, the mood shifted entirely. What was once quiet tension had turned into something warm and celebratory. One of the Exo-Guards, a bulky Cecilian-born tech specialist, pulled a tiny hologram projector from his belt and lit up a cartoon for Kairo to enjoy. Another silently passed over a snack packet he kept for "long missions" Kairo accepted it with a shy smile.

Darek buckled himself in with Kairo still resting comfortably on his lap, the boy calm and content now, eyes wide as he soaked in the high-tech interior. The ride began.

Halfway through the trip, Darek's helmet blinked with a private notification.

[CLASSIFIED—Adoption Approval: Clearance Level 7]

Agent Anira Vel, Orphanage Liaison Sector 3:

> "Commander Vos, after careful review of your documents, background, and the psychological profile crossmatches, we are pleased to inform you that you have been deemed fully qualified to adopt Kairo of Hearthbloom Orphanage. You may finalize the paperwork as early as tomorrow.

For today, just enjoy your time with him."

Darek blinked at the message, his heart pounding quietly beneath the armored plating.

He slowly turned off the holo, exhaled through his nose, and looked down at Kairo, who was now snuggled against his chest and half-asleep, his small fingers still gripping the edge of Darek's armor.

He smiled.

No need to say anything yet.

Let it be a surprise.

Let today just be.

Tomorrow, he'd be Dad.

But today… he was just him.

"Hey… wake up, we're here," Darek said softly, giving Kairo a gentle nudge.

Kairo stirred in his arms, blinking slowly as he rubbed the sleep from his eyes. The van doors slid open with a smooth hiss, revealing a wide sanctuary bathed in golden light. The air smelled like fresh grass and starlit dew. Before them stretched a vast green field, dotted with softly glowing trees and large burrows nestled between hills.

And then came the creatures round, soft, floating little furballs of varying colors. Each one had big curious eyes, stubby ears, and tiny paw-like feet that barely touched the ground as they bounced around playfully. Some chirped like songbirds, others hummed gently when they were happy. They flocked toward the newcomers without fear, especially drawn to the small human clinging sleepily to Darek's hand.

Kairo yawned, then smiled, wide and gleaming, his tiredness replaced by wonder. He looked up at Darek. "Fuzzlets!"

"You remembered the name," Darek said, chuckling as one of the fuzzballs floated up and gently booped against Kairo's leg. "Figured we could spend the day here… just the two of us."

Hand in hand, they walked down the sanctuary path, surrounded by bobbing, humming Fuzzlets. Kairo ran ahead a little, laughing as the creatures rolled after him. Darek followed behind, hands in his coat pockets, a warm smile on his face.

Back near the van, the squad of Exo-Guards leaned against the side of the vehicle, helmets off now, grinning among themselves.

"You ever seen the commander this relaxed?" one of them said, nudging another.

"Nope. And I've seen him punch a Consumer through a collapsing dimension gate with a smile."

Another Exo-Guard crossed their arms. "We gotta celebrate for him. I say we surprise him after the paperwork's signed."

"Big dinner? Loud music? Something cozy?"

"Something cozy," they all agreed, quietly watching the boy chase bouncing balls of fluff while his soon-to-be father watched over him like he was guarding the entire world.

In that moment, not even the weight of a thousand battlefields could dull the joy radiating from that sanctuary.

For now, everything was perfect.

Darek stood with his arms crossed, a small smile on his face as he watched Kairo sprint across the soft meadow, arms outstretched like wings, laughing as Fuzzlets bounced alongside him. The golden sunlight warmed the field, casting everything in a dreamlike glow.

Then thump.

He felt a soft nudge against his armored leg.

Glancing down, he spotted a single Fuzzlet trembling slightly, its tiny round body quivering as it stared up at him with wide, uncertain eyes. It must have wandered too close and gotten startled by the sheer size of the towering Exo-Guard. Darek slowly crouched down, his movements careful and deliberate, like he was handling a newborn.

"It's alright, little guy," he said gently.

He extended his hand, palm up. The Fuzzlet sniffed it once, then twice… and cautiously rolled into his hand. Darek lifted it up with a level of tenderness that seemed almost unnatural for someone wearing full reinforced armor. The Fuzzlet blinked… then let out a soft, delighted brrrp!

That sound was apparently a call.

Because within seconds, a swarm of Fuzzlets came rolling, bouncing, hovering toward him. They piled on with glee, chirping and purring as they clung to his shoulders, nestled in his arm joints, and curled up on the broad plates of his armor. One even settled like a crown on his head.

From across the sanctuary, Kairo turned around at the noise then burst out laughing.

"Darek! You look like a walking nest!" Kairo giggled, nearly falling over as he pointed.

The squad near the van didn't even try to hold it in.

"Commander Vos, tactical situation!" one joked over comms. "You're being overrun!"

"I repeat, the Fuzzlets have breached your armor's integrity!"

Another snapped a holo-picture, grinning like a fool. "This one's going on the board."

Darek stood there, completely covered in adorable, purring puffballs. He gave Kairo a dry look… then smirked. "You planning to help me, or just laugh?"

Kairo jogged back, still giggling. "You're on your own, Commander Fuzzlet!"

The laughter of a child and the joy of a field full of harmless creatures it was a moment Darek would treasure forever. Because under all the armor, behind all the mission reports and classified clearance… this was the future he fought for.

After a long, laughter-filled afternoon at the sanctuary, the sun began to dip low behind the hills, painting the sky in soft hues of lavender and rose. The Fuzzlets gave a gentle chorus of farewells chirps, hums, and little affectionate boops as Darek and Kairo made their way back to the exit.

Kairo had a small one nestled on his shoulder, refusing to leave until he promised to visit again. Darek gave it a little pat before it floated away with a cheerful trill.

"Where to now?" Kairo asked, eyes still wide with wonder.

Darek glanced down at him, a half-smile playing on his lips. "Ice cream."

Kairo lit up. "Yes!"

The pair strolled down the cobbled path just beyond the sanctuary's walls, heading toward a quiet part of Evolto City known for its charming cafés and colorful ice cream stalls.

Behind them, the van's engine hummed to life. Darek's squad waved from the open windows as they pulled away, grinning like proud uncles.

"Enjoy your time, Commander!" another added.

As the vehicle disappeared down the road, the city seemed to quiet just a bit as if giving the two space to enjoy something rare and precious: peace.

With hands clasped and steps in sync, Darek and Kairo walked side by side under the softening sky, passing curious civilians, blooming planters, and flickering lanterns. In this moment, there were no missions, no armor, no obligations just a future beginning to take shape, one scoop of ice cream at a time.

They walked through the city streets with a soft, peaceful energy wrapping around them like a blanket. The glow of lanterns mixed with the warm tones of evening shops, and the stars slowly blinked awake in the sky. Kairo, cone in hand, had picked a bright swirl of stardust-mango, while Darek settled for a simple vanilla he claimed it was "tactical flavor."

They laughed at silly street performers, watched a hover-puppeteer put on a light show, and even shared a bag of sweet spiral chips from a snack stand. Kairo chatted endlessly, telling Darek all about the Fuzzlets and how one tried to braid his hair though Kairo didn't have braids.

But as the moon began to rise, hanging full and luminous above Evolto City, Kairo's words started to slur. His steps grew slower, his ice cream long finished. Halfway back to the orphanage, his small hand slipped into Darek's again.

Then without a word Kairo stopped walking.

Darek turned just in time to see Kairo rubbing his eyes, head wobbling with sleep.

Darek smiled quietly and crouched down. "C'mere, starlight."

Kairo didn't resist. He leaned into Darek, arms wrapping around his neck, and was soon curled up in his arms fast asleep, face peaceful, lips slightly parted. He nestled into the crook of Darek's shoulder like he'd done it a hundred times before.

With his arms cradling the boy like the most precious cargo in the universe, Darek continued walking quiet, steady, protective. His armor made the faintest clinks, but each step was filled with warmth. The city lights reflected in his visor as he walked beneath the moonlight, carrying a future he never thought he'd deserve.

When they reached the orphanage gates, Ms. Lemma and Brother Grael were already waiting outside, hands over their hearts as they watched the sight in silence.

Neither of them said a word.

Because sometimes, silence says everything.
