Chapter 42 - A Headmaster’s Dilemma

"You are not supposed to be using magic outside of school. Please hand me your wands." The Headmaster demanded. "What for, sir? I just told you we did not perform the spell." Said Neville. "To verify you have not used any magic." Responded the Headmaster. At this, Professor McGonagall's ire rose. "Tell me Headmaster, do you think they are so advanced they could create a portkey at this age?" she asked as the Headmaster was casting Priori Incantatum on the wands. None of the wands showed evidence of either a Notice me Not or a portkey spell. Returning the wands, albeit reluctantly, he looked at Professor McGonagall. "No. But I had to verify." He said. "Sir. I would like to present a supposition to you." Neville said.

"We knew Draco was listening in to a conversation we were having at the carriages before getting on the train. He'd been trying to listen to our conversations for weeks now. We said we were going to meet someone in the third compartment of the second carriage. We, of course were not there. Would you like to see what Mr. Malfoy did upon entry Headmaster? We had set up a magical camera in the carriage. Here is one copy of the prints. Professor McGonagall, here is a set of prints for you. One set of prints has been sent to the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, and one set was sent to the School Board of Directors. If, as you say, using magic is illegal on the train, then surely Draco and his cohorts have violated this very law. What I would like to know Headmaster, is what you are going to do about it?" The photos showed Draco et all performing the magic, and the damage it caused.

"I am sorry Mr. Longbottom, however anybody could polyjuice others and take a picture." The Headmaster responded. "Yes, sir. That is true. Are you willing to perform the same test on their wands as you did ours? Just to verify?" Neville asked. The Headmasters face was puckered just for a second. "It's not all that critical, really. We also had magical monitoring crystals in the carriage." Neville continued. "Several of them, in fact. Here is one crystal. Professor McGonagall – here is a second. A third crystal has been provided to the DMLE, and a fourth crystal was provided to the Board of Governors." Neville replied. The Headmaster's shoulders slumped.

"Can we go now, headmaster" Neville asked. "Yes, yes. Of course." The Headmaster replied sadly. His hands were figuratively tied because the evidence was already spread in places he could not retrieve. He would have to dole out punishment after the holidays.
