Chapter 133 - CHAPTER 132

TOMMY WALKED WITH difficulty, thanks to the wound he had opened in his abdomen, but he still supported his fragile and emotionally distressed wife. After several minutes of walking, they found the lights of the next station.

Gregory Evans stepped forward, gun in hand, cautious and meticulous, checking that everything was safe, until he confirmed that there was no one there.

They climbed onto the platform and followed the stairs. They would have to find a vehicle to leave safely. They decided that the four of them would go up to the surface together, as Gregory Evans would not trust Katherine to be left alone with the two of them. It was only when they saw the street that they realized that night was already establishing its darkness over the city.

They set off in the direction they considered most appropriate, leaving the guards behind, handcuffed. One of them shouted:

— Are they going to leave us like this, handcuffed?

Floyd pulled a key from his pocket, which belonged to his handcuffs, and threw it near his feet. Before leaving, he commented:

— Don't take it the wrong way, it was a matter of security...

The small group walked in search of a car they could break into. A block away, they came across an old model, perhaps forgotten in the desperate moment the city was experiencing. With the skill learned over the confusing years of his life, Gregory Evans opened a door and using a trick with the wires he had learned during his time in the Armed Forces, he was able to start the car and start it. He felt like he was in one of those action movies he loved so much, breaking into cars, immersed in shootouts and cinematic situations, but there was no pleasure, no fun there, just the reality he had to face to protect the only person who mattered to him in life.

As he accelerated the car, not only he, but everyone else was shocked when they saw the scene in front of them, an important avenue in New York, practically deserted, abandoned, dark. A strong feeling of helplessness took over their hearts, faced with such a catastrophe and an even greater lack of understanding about what it all meant.

The biggest problems, when still within the scope of our understanding, are small compared to the smallest inexplicable fact... — Kenan thought, terrified by that vision.

It was a relief to each of them to remain silent. No one asked where they were going, made suggestions or made comments, just silence. Greg drove quietly, stealthily and slyly, watching every corner before he turned it, but there was only one place on his mind, home.
