Chapter 15 - A Step Forward.

As Maddie and Jake finished their playtime, they transitioned to having a delicious lunch together. The aroma of freshly prepared food filled the air, and the sound of laughter and chatter created a warm atmosphere. After lunch, they began to wrap up their activities, and plans were made to head home.

As they prepared to leave, Brian scooped up Jake and carried him out to the car. Brian gently placed Jake in the backseat, carefully buckling the seatbelt to ensure his little one's safety. Jake giggled and fidgeted with the straps, his bright eyes sparkling with excitement.

Meanwhile, Maddie walked over to the front passenger door, opened it, and slid into the seat. She settled in, fastening her own seatbelt as she glanced back at Jake, who was now securely fastened in and gazed out the window, her thoughts drifting as she watched the scenery pass by. Brian couldn't help but steal glances at her profile, his eyes lingering on her features.

As the car ride continued, Jake's chatter eventually subsided, and he drifted off to sleep, his small body swaying gently with the motion of the vehicle. The soft hum of the engine and the sound of Jake's peaceful breathing filled the car, while Maddie remained lost in thought, her gaze still fixed on the window. Brian's eyes would occasionally flicker towards her, but she didn't seem to notice.

The BMW 7-series pulls up outside Maddie's apartment building, and Brian brings the vehicle to a smooth stop. Maddie steps out of the car, her movements graceful as she walks over to the backseat door. She gently opens it and reaches in to grab Jake, who is still fast asleep. She carefully lifts him out and cradles him over her shoulder, his little head resting on her neck.

As she stands there, Brian gets out of the car and walks towards her, his eyes fixed on the tender scene before him. He reaches out a hand and gently touches Jake's brown hair, his fingers lightly brushing against Maddie's shoulder. The touch is brief, but it's clear that Brian is savoring the moment.

Maddie, seemingly unaware of the intimacy of the moment, turns and begins to make her way towards her apartment building, leaving Brian standing alone by the car, watching her disappear into the apartment building, a mix of emotions on his face. He takes a deep breath, gets back into his car, and drives away, the silence and emptiness of the vehicle a contrast to the warmth and life that had filled it just moments before.

Maddie carefully unlocks the apartment door and pushes it open, trying not to make a sound to avoid waking Jake. She steps inside, her movements gentle and deliberate, as she makes her way to Jake's room. With a tender touch, she lays him down on his bed, carefully tucking the blankets around him to keep him cozy and secure,

She turns off the light, casting a warm darkness over Jake's room. She stands there for a moment, gazing at her sleeping child, before softly closing the door.

She then heads to her own room, where she unwinds with a refreshing shower. After changing into comfortable pajamas, she's ready to relax. Just as she's settling in, her phone buzzes, breaking the silence. She glances at the screen, and a message from Alex pops up,

*Evening, Maddie, About the proposal, I would like to make a meeting to discuss some key aspects and finalize the details. Would you be available to meet tomorrow or sometime this week? Let me know a time that suits you, and I'll make sure to adjust my schedule accordingly. Looking forward to hearing from you.*

She smiles, texting back ,

*Evening Alex, I would be very pleased to meet you at my workplace tomorrow. Let's say around 10 am?*

As Maddie sends the message, she sets her phone aside and waits expectantly for Alex's response. A few moments pass, and her phone pings with an incoming notification. She picks it up, and her eyes light up as she sees Alex's reply - a simple yet reassuring thumbs-up emoji. A gentle smile spreads across her face, knowing that Alex has agreed to the meeting arrangements.

With a sense of satisfaction, Maddie turns off her phone, the screen fading to black. She slips under the covers, feeling the softness of her bed envelop her. As she lies down, her body relaxes, letting go of the day's tensions. Her eyelids grow heavy, and she lets out a contented sigh. With a peaceful smile still on her lips, Maddie drifts off to sleep, her mind at ease knowing that the meeting with Alex is all set.
