"Ahem! What's up with Nekoma today?"
Daiki Ogano——watched the game with a puzzled expression.
Right now, Nekoma was completely on the back foot.
"As a team known for its defense, don't they realize the danger of leaving the net wide open?"
"Every time Karasuno's No. 7 ace smashes the ball, they don't step up to block…"
"Why are they playing like this?"
Shinzen, who had never gone up against Karasuno, didn't understand.
But Nekoma's current tactics were actually based on valuable experience gained from their training matches with Karasuno.
As the saying goes—your opponent sometimes understands you better than you do.
Akira's spikes can be blocked, but only by a select few.
If Lev had sharper skills, he might be able to interfere with Akira's spikes!
The only reason Shiratorizawa was able to partially block Akira's attacks was because their players had the physical stats to do it—jumping high and hitting hard.
But when Akira chooses to force his way through a block like that, it drains his stamina fast.
So most of the time, he'll just avoid it altogether.
But those kinds of spikes? Aoba Johsai couldn't stop them. And neither can Nekoma.
Why? Because they don't have anyone strong enough to stop him—not even enough to interfere.
A trump card can only be countered by another trump card!
Wolves can't threaten dragons.
So Nekoma's choice today? Honestly, it was the best possible option.
Shinzen's doubts about Nekoma's strategy only stemmed from never having faced Akira themselves.
Some things you just don't get unless you experience them firsthand.
But if you're just watching from the sidelines…
You'll never truly understand.
As the players from Shinzen looked on, confused, Nekoma's defense slowly fell apart.
"That strange feeling of helplessness again…"
Everyone on Nekoma was struggling to find their footing.
They'd known going in that they might not be able to beat Karasuno—but having it happen for real… it still stung.
In the end, they only scored 16 points before Karasuno closed the set.
On the neighboring court, the match between Fukurodani and Ubugawa was also wrapping up.
As expected, Fukurodani held the lead.
Ubugawa's serves were sharp, but once they were received cleanly, their strategy collapsed.
Fukurodani took the set with ease: 25–21.
"Oh?"
Seeing the other match finish early, both teams glanced over.
"Karasuno 25, Nekoma 16…"
"Nekoma only scored 16?!"
"But they were dominating Karasuno just yesterday!"
Ubugawa's captain, Shokichi Gonmatsu, stared at the scoreboard in disbelief.
He was the one Daiki often called "cod roe mouth."
"The only change in Karasuno is…"
"That new guy!"
He turned his gaze toward Akira, who was now resting off-court.
Their setter, Chigaya, sighed while sipping from his water bottle.
"It's not just his strength—Karasuno's whole momentum is different today."
Meanwhile, Karasuno and Nekoma were chatting post-match.
"Hey!"
"I expected everyone to improve, but I didn't think you would level up this much!"
Kuroo came over and clapped Akira on the shoulder in surprise.
"Haha, thanks, Kuroo-senpai," Akira replied with a small smile.
"Seriously though!"
"Does that spike of yours have spin on it too? It hits your arm and just bounces right off—impossible to catch!"
"It's kinda like that guy Sakusa's attack!"
Yamamoto chimed in with a laugh.
Even in the match just now, Nekoma had been completely thrown off by Akira's spikes.
"Sakusa? Who's that?" Hinata asked, curious.
"You don't know?" Kuroo looked a bit shocked.
"He's the ace of Itachiyama Institute—and one of the top three aces in the country!"
"If there's a top three, who are the other two?" Lev leaned in curiously. He didn't know much either.
Kuroo patted him on the shoulder.
"There's Ushijima from Shiratorizawa up in Tohoku, Sakusa from Kanto, and Kiryu from Kyushu."
"They're this year's top three high school aces."
"By the way, Sakusa's the only one among them who's a second-year."
"Well," he added, "just because they're top three aces doesn't mean their teams are top three too."
Hinata's eyes lit up with determination.
"We've gotta beat all of them!"
"Hahaha! That's the spirit!" Bokuto appeared beside him, slapping his shoulder with a loud laugh.
"You're my kind of guy!"
"Haha, no kidding!" Kuroo scratched his head, smiling.
"But yeah—Itachiyama, where Sakusa plays? That team's stacked. Legit championship contenders."
"They've won both Spring and Inter-High tournaments before!"
"We went up against them in the second round of qualifiers and got knocked out."
Then he shot a teasing look at Bokuto, who was still chatting with Hinata.
"Fukurodani lost to Itachiyama in the finals and ended up as Tokyo's second rep."
"Would you stop bringing that up already?!" Bokuto shouted, exasperated.
"Next time we face them, I'm gonna crush them!!"
