The room was dimly lit, tension thick in the air.
Silver Surfer stood motionless inside the containment pod—eyes shut, body upright but limp, like a machine on standby. Every test they ran, every spell Strange conjured, every stimulant and psychic probe from Charles had failed.
Nothing could wake him.
Tony crossed his arms, brow furrowed behind his visor. "So what's your plan, kid? You found him… but he's not confessing to anything. He's practically comatose."
Aiden leaned back against a support beam, arms folded. "I do have a suggestion… not exactly popular, though. But considering the stakes?" He glanced around at the gathered heroes. "We don't have the luxury of options."
Fury stepped up, eyes narrowing. "Let's hear it."
Aiden shrugged, then said casually, "I know someone—she's been working on countermeasures for entities like Galactus. Said she might be able to whip something up."
He paused for effect. "You all probably know her… goes by Scarlet Witch."
The silence shattered like glass.
"WHAT?!" snapped Strange, almost in unison with Professor X, who stood beside him.
The X-Men hadn't participated in the fight earlier, but they were assembled now. Planning. Preparing. Watching.
"That woman is unstable," Strange said sharply. "She's wanted for multiple crimes—"
"She's a terrorist," Fury growled. "She's murdered agents. Destroyed government facilities. Don't even get me started on Chicago."
"And that matters right now… why?" Aiden said flatly, his gaze steely. "We're talking about Galactus. The universe devourer. The cosmic force that makes Thanos look like a toddler with a toy gauntlet."
Strange's tone hardened. "We don't work with villains, Blake. Maybe you don't care about crossing lines, but we do. There's a reason we don't blur them."
Captain America stepped forward, voice calm but firm. "If we open the door to villains aiding us… we become hypocrites."
Aiden's jaw tensed. "You think I'm thrilled about this? Hell no. But we're not exactly drowning in alternatives here."
Tony raised a hand. "He's kinda right. I hate to admit it, but we do need all the help we can get."
"Yeah, Aiden has a point," added Spider-Man, quieter but not uncertain.
Carol Danvers crossed her arms. "Kid, this is dangerous. Wanda isn't just unstable—she's unpredictable. She only ever looks out for herself. What if she flips mid-battle?"
Thor stepped in, Mjolnir resting against his shoulder. "People can change. And this threat… it dwarfs our egos and grudges."
Steve turned to Thor. "Change isn't guaranteed. Didn't your brother switch sides every other month?"
From behind, T'Challa's deep voice cut in, low and commanding. "Wakanda does not do business with its enemies. Especially not monsters like her."
Tony turned, brow raised. "That's funny coming from you. Weren't you at war with Namor just three years ago?"
T'Challa's expression didn't change. "We've settled our differences. We are no longer enemies."
"Well, get ready to do the same again," Aiden snapped, stepping forward now. "Because maybe it's time all of you got off your high horse and realized you're not the moral gods you think you are."
He pointed toward the pod. "Earth is on the brink of being swallowed by a cosmic force beyond our comprehension. Unless any of you have a better idea, stop wasting my time."
The room went quiet for a moment—until Aiden leaned in again.
"Actually, Fury…" he said, voice low and cold. "Since everyone's so hung up on what she's done… list it. Tell me exactly what Scarlet Witch's crimes are. All of them."
Fury clenched his jaw. "Fine. Destruction of government property. Murder of multiple agents. And she orchestrated a terrorist-level incident in Chicago—cost lives, infrastructure, resources. You want more?"
Aiden scoffed. "Yeah. Two outta three of those? I've done myself. Where's my arrest warrant?"
Captain America's brows furrowed. "What are you saying?"
"I'm saying most of those charges are half-truths wrapped in convenient headlines. That 'government property'? It was a black-site facility doing illegal experiments on mutants. I'm a mutant, by the way. Those agents she killed? They were sent to execute her. And that so-called 'terrorist attack' in Chicago? They raided her base first—she blew it to escape, not destroy."
He turned toward Strange and the others, voice rising.
"Scarlet Witch is dangerous. I believe that. But let's not kid ourselves—everything she's done stems from the people Fury here works for. People who hate mutants. People who hunt us."
He locked eyes with them all, daring them to challenge him.
"Unless you can name one crime—one—that she committed out of sheer malice, without provocation… I'm not backing down."
Charles stepped forward slowly, eyes soft with age and burden. "You still carry so much anger… so much pride. Did you learn nothing from the last time? The pain it caused?"
Aiden's gaze turned cold. "Learned something? Have you? You've been alive for nearly a century, and you've let monsters go—again and again—only for them to come back and cause more pain."
He pointed at himself. "I ended one. I killed him. And I'd do it again. Right here. Right now. With all of you watching."
A beat of silence. His next words dropped like thunder.
"So don't lecture me, Charles. That mind game shit doesn't work on me anymore."
He looked around once more, eyes daring any of them to move.
"I'm playing nice… because I want to. Not because I have to."
He pointed at the containment pod.
"There is nothing stopping me from taking that corpse-of-a-man and walking right out of here."
Everyone felt the urge to push back, to argue, to say something—but no one did. Deep down, they all knew Aiden was right. No one liked it. No one wanted it. But when the fate of the planet hung in the balance, there was only one option left.
Scarlet Witch.
"…Fine," Fury finally muttered, the weight of the decision dragging down his words. "We'll work with her. But only for this. Afterward, she goes back to being a wanted criminal."
Aiden turned on his heel, gaze sharp. "No. You're going to find a way to pardon her. That's her only demand. And don't start whining about red tape or how hard it is. You can do it—and you will."
Before anyone could object, Aiden continued, firm and commanding, "I'll go get her. Tony, Banner, Strange, Richards… and Valeria—you'll be working with her directly. Keep her close. I don't think she's a criminal, but that doesn't mean I trust her. Learn everything. Watch her every move. If she steps out of line…" his voice dropped into a dangerous calm, "I'll end it. Fast."
He didn't wait for agreement or protests. Aiden turned and walked out, leaving nothing but silence and tension in his wake.
"…Ha. I like the kid," Tony said with a smirk, breaking the silence.
"I don't," Rogers replied coldly, arms crossed.
